The Champions 🏆

It’s late December and golf’s silly season kicked into high gear last week, with most of the action focused on the Showdown at Shadow Creek, as well as the PNC Championship.

  • At ‘The Showdown’ in Vegas, Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler defeated Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau

  • At the PNC Championship in Orlando, Bernhard Langer and his son Jason narrowly defeated Tiger Woods and his son Charlie on the 2nd sudden death playoff hole at the Ritz Carlton Resort in Orlando

  • On the DP World Tour, John Parry won the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open, to get his first win in 14 years.

Charlie Steals the Show

This year’s PNC Championship may go on to be one of the most memorable in tournament history. Not only did fans get to see a healthy looking Tiger Woods walk the course for three straight rounds (pro-am + tournament) - they also got their annual dose of the Charlie Woods show. This year’s edition of the father-son event was no exception. The big story of the day came Sunday on the par 3, 4th hole when Charlie made his first ever hole-in-one. It was a proud moment as he celebrated with his dad on the course.

The final round of the PNC saw Team Woods go shot for shot with the Langer’s. They traded birdies all day long and both teams finished at -28 par. It took extra holes to decide a winner, with the Langer’s draining an eagle putt on the 1st playoff hole to secure the victory.

Low Ratings for ‘The Showdown’

‘The Showdown’ at Shadow Creek featuring Brooks, Bryson, Rory and Scottie failed to produce the juice that fans had been hoping for. The match, which was intended to bring the PGA TOUR & LIV back together did not have much buzz. While there were a few memorable moments, there wasn’t a whole lot of trash talking or incredible golf shots. SBJ’s Josh Carpenter reported that the ratings were pretty poor, with just 625K viewers on TNT & TBS, which would rank it 2nd lowest for viewership among the matches played in recent years.

LIV ‘expected’ to land a TV Deal

LIV Golf is reportedly ‘expected’ to sign a television rights deal with FOX Sports for the 2025 Golf season, according to Sports Business Journal. The move comes after the deal with the CW was not renewed for next year. A deal with FOX wouldn’t come as a huge surprise. Talks are said to have now reached “advanced stages” and representatives from FOX & LIV played golf together recently while in Vegas. LIV had previously engaged with FOX in an effort to get a TV deal but those attempts were unsuccessful in years past. A TV deal with a sports network would mark a major achievement for the league.

PGA TOUR Hiring a CEO

In an end of year video update shared by the TOUR, Commissioner Jay Monahan has announced plans to hire a chief executive offer. He added that “everything is on the the table” for the future direction of the business. The news comes amidst reports that the TOUR & LIV are said to be close to nearing a deal that would be subject to approval by the U.S. Department of Justice.
