1. Tom Kim Avoids Mandatory Military Service

Tom Kim won the men’s individual gold medal at the Asian Games in Japan, shooting a final-round 6-under 64 to finish at 18-under 262. The victory earned him a military-service exemption in South Korea, where most able-bodied men are required to serve about 18 months. Kim made a special effort to compete after the Presidents Cup, saying he was most proud to win a medal for his country despite the pressure. South Korea finished second in the team event behind China, so teammate S.H. Kim did not receive the exemption.

2. Sergio Garcia Seeks Clean Break From LIV Golf

Sergio Garcia’s lawyers are asking a bankruptcy court to formally terminate his LIV Golf contract, arguing that simply rejecting the agreement may leave uncertainty over whether he is still bound by it. That uncertainty could make tournament organizers and sponsors hesitant to work with Garcia because he cannot clearly claim he is free of competing contractual commitments. Garcia has said he plans to play more on the DP World Tour in 2027, making the legal clarification important as he plans his future.

Phil Mickelson voluntarily entered a treatment facility earlier this year, seeking help for what his representative described as “family trauma and addiction.” The 56-year-old has since completed the treatment and left the facility, according to reports. Mickelson has been largely absent from professional golf in 2026, playing just one LIV Golf event while dealing with personal and family matters.
